wondering about God?
Nearly everyone at some point or another wonders about God. Does God exist? How can I know that God exists? What is God like? Why did God allow this to happen to me? And so on. The Bible declares and our reason confirms that the existence of God may be known through creation, his handiwork. "The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork," wrote the psalmist (Psalm 19:1).
The apostle Paul agreed with this declaration and proclaimed that God's "invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and his divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made" (Romans 1:20). Reflection on the fact that the universe had a beginning and seems designed to support the existence of life gives credence to these biblical claims. Additionally, the existence of God seems necessary for there to be meaning and purpose in life and for there to be such a thing as right and wrong. Believing in God is an act of faith, but it is a step into the light, not a leap into the darkness.
But what is God like? Christians hold that God is invisible, eternal, immortal, all-knowing, all-powerful, everywhere present, perfectly wise, just and loving. But more powerful than any theological statement is the person of Jesus. That is because Jesus, quite simply, was God in the flesh. Jesus reveals God to us, so if you want to know what God is like, simply look into the face of Jesus. In Jesus we see a God who, in love and humility, temporarily gave up his might attributes in order to save humanity from the wreckage of sin. In Jesus we see a God who forgives, but also demands holiness. In the life, death and resurrection of Jesus we see the perfect justice and perfect mercy of God displayed.

Through Jesus we not only see what God is like; we also get to know God himself. If you want to know God, you must come through Jesus. Jesus helps us to see that God is personal and therefore must be known as we know each other - through relationship. God does exist and has revealed himself to humankind in the person of Jesus, "the way, and the truth and the life" (John 14:6). It is in Jesus that we find the answers to our wonderings about God.
